The WORD of the Week

Matthew 3:7-10

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Stupid Fact of the Week
There was only one civilian casualty during the three-day Battle of Gettysburg

So... I've Begun Writing a Book...
It's a murder mystery... It has a very old-timey, Sam Spade-esque feel to it... very who-dunnit noir...

It takes place in the future, choronologically speaking... however, it takes into account the new dark age that begins circa 2830AD(CE)...

The plot centers around a serial killer with an unusual calling card: a steaming pile of poo.

To crack the case, the gumshoe must trace the evidence back to the bowels from which it sprung.

I call it:

"The Origin of the Feces."

Thank you. Thank you.

Yes. You, sir. The bald gentleman in the back... No, sir, I'm sorry. You can't have that 30 seconds of your life back.

That's all the time I have for now, ladies and gentleman. Thank you again. Any further comments can be directed to my attorney.

GHANA WINS!
The small African nation managed to do what the U.S. could not - beat the Czech Republic.

What does this mean for team USA? If they can manage to beat Italy by a margin of 2-3 goals, Group E will basically be deadlocked heading to the final group match. This would mean that all the U.S. would have to do to advance is beat Ghana on the 22nd.

USA vs. Italia begins in about 10 minutes... off I go.

Liberal spin at it ag'in
Well, I guess you can add USA Today to the list of anti-American organizations.

Look how they reported on the World Cup:

"The USA's chances of advancing out of group play for the second consecutive World Cup took a major hit Monday when it was beaten by the Czech Republic 3-0 in the opening match for both countries."

Absolutely no mention of the great passing and running they did.

The fear:
"
Video games may look innocent..."

The heartbreak:
"'We have kids who don't know how to communicate with people face-to- face because they've spent the last three years talking to somebody in Korea through a computer,' Bakker said. 'Their social network has completely disappeared.'"

The Gateway:
"
It can start with a Game Boy..."

The low point:
"By the time he was in college he was gaming about 14 hours a day and using drugs to play longer."

The ray of hope:
"
He says he has been drug- and game-free for eight months."

Go ahead. Read the entire article. You know you want to. Everybody's doin' it. What are you, chicken? Alright, whatever... the leave and don't ever come back. This site is only for cool people, and cool people read articles like this one.

Postmodernism, Atheism, Existentialism... Jean-Paul-Charles-Aymard Sartre
"There is no human nature, since there is no God to conceive it."

J-P does a bit of circular reasoning, but makes an interesting point.

He begins with the idea that nothing is created without a use; a cause. No human inventor seeks to invent, develop, or otherwise form an object without a concept of what duty or duties it will perform when complete.

He then moves rather abruptly to the lack of human nature without really building a case for the lack of a God/creator/inventor as it would relate his opening premise.

But an interesting point none the less.

Existentialism. Best rooted in Atheism or Theism?

Lyrics of the Week

ON THE NICKEL
by Tom Waits

("I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby.")

sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.

so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.

and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.

so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.

so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.

so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.
