The WORD of the Week

Matthew 3:7-10

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

2 Weeks Off
I finally have some time now, as I just wrapped the reality-gameshow-tv show that kept me busy 24/7.... well, really more like 16/6, but we'll round up.

My apologies for neglecting my blogging duties... hopefully, I'll be able to make up for it over the next 2 weeks when I have nothing to do but relax and hang out with the fam/friends on this odd coast.

First up: DVD recommendations... The Daego called me recently from a video store and asked me to recommend something. I was ashamed to say that I had no idea what movies had come out in the past several months (good or bad), and so now that I have some time to research, I will provide my brilliant insights here:

[[CURRENTLY AVAILABLE]]
JUNE

"Flawless" - Michael Caine, Demi Moore, Crime/Heist drama... kind of a sleeper flick... I haven't seen it (though I haven't seen much lately, so no real shock), but I hope to give it a shot soon.

"The Onion Movie" - Sure. Why not. Looked funny enough in the trailer.

"Weeds (Season 3)" - If you haven't seen this show, you should. It's amazing. Based on some of the things I'm hearing about this coming season, this looks to be the last good season of this show.

"Rescue Me (Season 4)" - Another great show. This season has some incredible moments, however, this show seems also on the downslope and you can see it happen about halfway thru this season.

"The Other Boleyn Girl" - Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson. I couldn't bring myself to see this one in theatres, but I'll definitely see it on video.

"Funny Games" - If you're ever in the mood for a really raw, demented thriller, here's your ticket. With Tim Roth and Michael Pitt, I'm there.

"Be Kind Rewind" - Come on. Jack Black, Mos Def, Michel Gondry. Three reasons should be enough.

"Chaos Theory" - I'm a huge Ryan Reynolds fan, so I'll be checking this one out... I'm not gonna risk anything by recommending it.

Others worth considering:
"Charlie Bartlett"
"Persepolis"
"The Hammer"
"Caramel (Sukkar Banat)"
"John Adams"

JULY

"Mad Men (Season 1)" - I still haven't seen a full episode of this show, but judging from the highlight reels and trade mags, this is one of the best shows in a long while. I'll be checking it out.

"City of Men" - All reports of this film suggest it is far inferior to Morelli's "City of God," but let's face it, it'd be pretty amazing to surpass that on your next effort.

"My Blueberry Nights" - How far under the radar was this one? Very. I'm definitely gonna catch this one soon.

"Stop-Loss" - Just another in a long line of poor- to mediocre-performing Iraq war films, this is one of the few I'd actually like to see.

"The Bank Job" - This one got a lot of good press; based on a true story; Jason Statham.

"Shine a Light" - The Martin Scorsese documentary on the Rolling Stones.

Others worth considering:
"30 Days (Season 2)"
"Monk (Season 6)"
"Reno 911 (Season 5)"
"21"

August

"The Counterfeiters" - Great film. I predicted it would win the Oscar and it did. I'm predicting I'll be seeing it again.

"House, M.D. (Season 4)" - The new season starts soon. If you need to catch up, this was a pretty decent season considering the drastic reshuffling of cast members.

"Redbelt" - I'm gonna go out on a limb and recommend this one. It's a Mamet film (so I love it), which means it isn't terribly marketable to the mass audience, but it's got a different feel to it than the usual Mamet fare, so who knows. Give it a shot.

Others worth considering:
"Smart People"
"Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day"
"Recount"
"Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?"
"Chicago 10"

Next Post: DVD's Coming Soon (September, October, who knows maybe even November)

Lyrics of the Week

ON THE NICKEL
by Tom Waits

("I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby.")

sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.

so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.

and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.

so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.

so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.

so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.
