The Film of the Week
The WORD of the Week

Matthew 3:7-10

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Movies, Films, etc.
For those who don't know my classification...

A Film is a work of art. See anything by Kubric, anything from France, or anything by Baz Luhrman for examples...

A "Movie" is nothing more than that... a moving picture... cheap entertainment... mind candy.

So, I've recently caught up... or attempted to catch up... on my current (and coming soon) film knowledge...

Here's what I've come up with:

Indie Flicks:
"Dallas 362"
Written by, Directed by, and Starring Scott Caan.
Not a huge fan of Scott... but I like him. I'd be interested to see his first crack at directing.
Co-starring the (insert pretty much any adjective here) Jeff Goldblum.
NOTE: the link is to the Red Band Trailer... there is another cut of a trailer on the apple page if you'd rather. If you don't know what a red band trailer is... well, you're out of luck.
Anticipated Rating: 4.6 (out of 10)

"Gunner Palace"
Hell Yeah! A film about this "war." Of course I'm gonna love it.
Anticipated Rating: 8.9

"Naked Fame"
Another Documentary. This one is currently cruisin the gay and lesbian film fests. A lot of people seem to be raving about the lead male performance. I'm liking this one quite a bit judging solely by the trailer.
Anticipated Rating: 7.0

"Sharks 3D"
So, based on the title, I thought I'd be watching a trailer for a new version of that stupid Will Smith-voiced Dreamworks flick that would now require a set of those lovely glasses to fully enjoy. But no, this is one of those James Cameron/Natn'l Geographic-esque underwater, up-close-and-personal adventures that seems to be quasi-decent if you enjoy beautiful underwater photography.
Anticipated Rating: 6.7

"Stephen Tobolowsky's Birthday Party"
Are you going to his birthday part? Do you even know who he is? I guarantee you that you do, but I won't spoil it for you just yet. I'll let you figure it out.
Looks interesting... but also looks like it could be one of those doomed "failed movie star comeback" attempts (see "Pauly Shore is dead"). We'll just have to see.
Anticipated Rating: 4.7

"The Ballad of Jack and Rose"
THIS FILM IS "CURRENTLY PLAYING." IF IT IS PLAYING ANYWHERE NEAR YOU... GO AND SEE IT!!! The wonderfully amazing, incredibly talented, inhumanly terrific, yes I sweat his nuts, can this man get any better?, sexy, dangerous, under-rated, too bad-ass for words, should've won the oscar for "Gangs" but the Academy is gay, handsome, stylish, if I were a woman I would have his child... DANIEL DAY-LEWIS is in it.
So what are you doing still reading this... Go see the Film. NOW!
Anticipated Rating: 11.0

Not so Indie:
"Zathura"
This is from the guy who wrote "Jumanji." It's pretty much... well... "Jumanji."
Anticipated Rating: 0.9
NOTE: This is a "Movie."

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's coming!!! April 29th!!!!
And there are two new trailers... yes, actual trailers... not teasers...
enjoy.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/touchstone/hitchhikersguidetothegalaxy/trailer_2/
http://www.apple.com/trailers/touchstone/hitchhikersguidetothegalaxy/trailer_3/
Anticipated Rating: 8.8

"A Scanner Darkly"
So, Keanu's in it. But then again so is Robert Downey, Jr.. Woody Harrelson is in it. But then again, it's directed by Richard Linklater. Wynona Ryder is in it. But then again, the title is kool. Plus, check out the... animation?... cinematography?... It's just too kool... or I'm that drunk.
Anticipated Rating: 7.5

"Rory O'Shea Was Here"
Focus Features, I love you. This looks good... Let's hear it for the Irish. From the people who did "About a Boy," "Bridget Jones' Diary," and "Billy Elliot." It's one of those touchy-feely, let's enjoy life type films... could be a dissapointment if it relies too heavily on emotion... but it looks like this ones got some good story backin it up. I like it.
Anticipated Rating: 7.1

"House of D"
Not a big Duchovny fan. Definitely not a big Erykah Badu fan. However, it looks like Tea holds her own in this flick, which appears to be another in the Will Hunting/Finding Forrester genre. Plus, Robin William appears to nail another tremendous performance, so it's definitely worth a viewing.
Anticipated Rating: 5.3

"A Love Song for Bobby Long"
I've always maintained that Mr. Travolta's talents have deteriorated steadily over the past few years after his "comeback" in Pulp Fiction. I'm going to continue to maintain that sentiment as the trailer for this film really doesn't impress me all that much as far as he's concerned. Now, true, Scarlett Johanson is in it, which should make my boy Jerzy happy, however, I'm gonna have to see this in it's entirety before I'm convinced.
Anticipated Rating: 3.9

And Finally...

Last but not least....

"SIN CITY"
Which I will hopefully be seeing very soon...
However... if you haven't seen the second trailer, here it is:

Lyrics of the Week

ON THE NICKEL
by Tom Waits

("I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby.")

sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.

so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.

and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.

so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.

so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.

so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.
