The WORD of the Week |
Matthew 3:7-10
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.
And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

I have to say that your gun control one is lacking a few key points that would impact at the very least hunters, or people looking to buy a quality, used handgun. Obama also voted for legislation that would have allowed people to sue gun manufacturers when their guns were used illegally. He voted for a ban on ammo that covers a great deal of hunting ammunition (if it can penetrate a bear, boar, moose, or water buffalo, it can do severe damage to Kevlar). He's against Right to Carry. He wants the Clinton Gun Bans back in place (and their definition of "assault weapon" is laughable, as the guns in question are all semi-auto, but some look like military weapons. Some do not, but were still not sold often during the gun ban years because of the magazines typically used in them being illegal, like the Ruger 10-22 and Mini-14). He doesn't want police departments to be able to sell their old service weapons (read: pistols and semi-auto long guns), and thinks you should be 21 to own a gun. I hate to break it to him, but with responsible people teaching you how to use a gun, and with state laws about how old you have to be to hunt, that doesn't make sense. NY is one of the more strict as to how old you have to be before you start hunting, and they say small game at 12. I am a strong believer that as a hunter, you need your own gun, even if its just a .22 rifle, because its something you'll use the rest of the time you pursue hunting. I've owned a gun (a Marlin Model 60, .22caliber, 15 round, semi-auto) for the last 16 years. I knew you didn't take it out and play with it when it wasn't time to use it, and any kid that's trained correctly will know that as well. Anywho, I just wanted to point out that there's more than just two or three issues/bills that have been voted on.

El Doyle... thanks for the comment. I very much understand your strong feelings toward this particular issue and thoroughly enjoyed your thoughts, as it is not an issue that I focus on in great detail (which is probably a mistake on my part) with great regularity. Also, before I respond, let me get this on the record: Nothing, in either of these two posts on the candidates, is meant to "slam," nor is it meant to endorse, either candidate. I do not now, nor probably will I ever (read: in the next two months) support either candidate, nor do I currently plan on voting for either of them.
Alright. On to my comments.
"Obama also voted for legislation that would have allowed people to sue gun manufacturers when their guns were used illegally."
This one isn't so much missing as it is just lost in the hubub (sp?) of the post. From the post: Barack Obama has voted Nay on "a bill that provides liability protection for manufacturers, dealers or importers of firearms or ammunition products, as well as their trade associations, for harm caused by criminal or unlawful misuse."
"He voted for a ban on ammo that covers a great deal of hunting ammunition"
All of the voting record information ("The Record") for both posts was taken from votesmart.org, which appeared to be the most comprehensive of the voting record websites I looked at. There was nothing concerning a "ban on ammo," on that webpage and therefore it was not included. Upon your comment, I researched a bit further and found this site that says "In 2005, Senator Barack Obama voted in favor of legislation sponsored by Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) that would have banned nearly all rifle ammunition used for hunting and sport shooting."
He's against Right to Carry. He wants the Clinton Gun Bans back in place... He doesn't want police departments to be able to sell their old service weapons... and thinks you should be 21 to own a gun.
I do not know for a fact if any of these are now, or have ever been, held by Obama. My intent (with the "The Talk" section) was to treat both candidates fairly, give them the benefit of the doubt, and let them speak for themselves (through their respective websites), and then to show how they have used their positions in the past to vote on issues and see how they align. This "defense" is simply to reiterate the fact that I am not attempting to mislead by hand-selecting what to include, but rather letting the candidates speak for themselves. This inevitably leads to them selecting only the items they wish to be discussed, and so I appreciate any additional information (which you've now given, so thank you again).

Abortion: S Amdt 3896 - Prohibiting Funds in S 1200 from being used for abortions - NV (not voted); S Amdt 3330 - Prohibiting funds for groups that perform abortions - NV; S Amdt 2707 - Prohibiting U.S. Assistance for Groups that Support Coercive Abortion - NV
Gun Control - S Amdt 4070 - Prohibiting Funds in the Bill S 1200 from being used to decrease Gun ownership - NV
Immigration - HR 2764 - Inclusion of Consolidated Appropriations -NV; S Amdt 3117 - Border Fence and Customs Appropriations - NV;HR 2638 - DHS Appropriations - NV; S Amdt 2480 Border Fence and Customs appropriations - NV
I could only find one vote on Same Sex marriage which was a vote to invoke cloture which I don't think says much on the issue of Same sex marriage.
On other issues other than abortion there were less NVs than Ys or Ns. Also I have not done a comparison of other senators and their NVs.

According to Project Vote Smart's website (where I obtained the "The Record" voting record statistics), a "NV" could represent any of the following: "Not Voting, Excused, Absent, or Present."
I chose to leave these items out of both posts as I hadn't the time to dig through which of the four each vote was and/or provide reasoning for such a vote. Also, Obama has said that he has voted "Present" on bills he agreed with but felt were unconstitutional. Whether or not this is true, and exactly which votes these were, is a matter of conjecture and another discussion altogether.
The one instance of a "NV" vote that I included (in this [Obama] post concerning gun control/2nd amendment) was due to the fact that I had spoken with Mr. Doyle at some length about Obama's position on this issue and I knew he would comment and so I wanted to have as comprehensive a base as was possible before that discussion began.

Lyrics of the Week |
ON THE NICKEL
by Tom Waits
("I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby.")
sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.
so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.
and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.
so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.
so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.
so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.
