The WORD of the Week

Matthew 3:7-10

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Another Political Detour
Alright, so I still plan to get back to Obama and the issues...

...but for a moment I'd just like to rant about these ridiculous campaigns and the ridiculous media that sends them plummeting further into this moronic limbo...

First, before I really get going, I've been listening to a lot more talk radio now that I have some time during the day... I was listening to one show (couldn't tell you the name), where the host was on with a guest talking about the speaking/oratory skills of the two Presidential candidates, and commented something to the effect of: "I know everyone likes to talk about how much 'better' an orator Obama is, but I think the difference is actually quite slight, if it even exists at all."... I was listening to another program (couldn't tell you the name of this either, thought it was also strictly conservative), where the host made the comment of: "He (McCain) really is a poor speaker. He's getting better, I have to admit. But he most certainly isn't the orator that Obama is."... I continued listening to one of those two shows, I'll leave it to you to figure out which.... I do not hate McCain, I do not wish him to be seen as a blubbering idiot (as he is not), but no one is making the case that Obama is as much a war hero as McCain... I think it only fair to recognize something that is nearly as obvious going the other way.

Next, to Palin... and the nonstop chatter of the media bias against her so proudly proclaimed in the conservative media outlets...

No, the media has not ever questioned Obama's capabilities as a father... just as the media has not ever questioned Palin's flag-pin-wearing patriotism, her middle name, her "secret" religious beliefs, etc... both sides get it.

Yes, it sucks that the media keeps harping on Palin's pregnant daughter... but I won't shed a tear and demand that people leave her alone so long as the family/campaign keeps putting her in the spotlight/on the stage/etc....

Also on Palin, don't forget to FactCheck... even the cute ones.

    Funny video.

It's nice to see sexism abound on both sides of the party line. Did I say nice? That's not quite the word I was looking for. It just makes me think more and more that this is some kind of heightened sporting event. You cheer for your team and rip at the other team at any chance you get. Did I say heightened? That's not quite the word I was looking for.

Someone should start a Revolution or something.

Jon Stewart is great... oh wait that's not the word I'm looking for. Wow, he looked real hard and found pundits contradicting themselves. I wonder if he's even put half that effort looking for liberals doing the very same thing... I doubt it but I don't watch his show so I could be wrong, I'll search youtube. Finally I would say that the difference between Clinton and Palin is that Clinton is the one who complained about the "extreme sexism" shown to her. Palin, as far as I know, has not. But again, I could be wrong, I'll search youtube.

Lyrics of the Week

ON THE NICKEL
by Tom Waits

("I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby.")

sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.

so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.

and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.

so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.

so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.

so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.
