Matthew 3:7-10

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Dr. Paul: Or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Republican Party
For those of you who don't know, I'm a huge fan of Ron Paul (as are some of you, apparently). For those of you who didn't know, now you do.

Dr. Paul has confirmed what I have felt (though have probably been unable to articulate clearly) for some time: When it comes to politics at the federal level I am conservative to an extreme degree.

Normally I would feel the need to defend this somehow, or justify it, given my "liberal" stances in the past. However, since most of Dr. Paul's support is currently coming from more "liberal" sources, such as former registered democrats, left-leaning television programs like "Real Time with Bill Maher," and left-leaning websites like Crooks and Liars (crooksandliars.com), it probably isn't terribly shocking to most of you that he has my support.

To be sure, Dr. Paul is appealing. Refusing many of the "perks" associated with a D.C. position and treating it as a public service rather than a fast-track to power and/or lucrative retirement is certainly a breath of fresh air to many citizens sickened by the level of politic-ing and corruption in our government "of/by/for the people."

He is a genuine person who appeals to the common man, not because he attempts to speak like the common man or relate to him/her by discussing his humble upbringing (I mean, he's a doctor, for crying out loud. That's one of the big ones, right? Doctor, Lawyer,... something else), but because he honestly and diligently applies himself and his resources to truly helping the common man, whether it be with his vote in congress or with his private medical practice.

He is also appealing as a Presidential candidate. He is "well-seasoned" in years and experience in public service, he has served in the military, and (now that W has forever lowered the bar for Presidential public speaking) is a more than competent orator. To be sure he is one of the most intelligent candidates running, as well as the most ethical, honest, and consistent (as much as I would love to never hear the words "flip-flop" again, it must be noted that his voting record is nearly impeccable).

So what, then, is the problem? The problem is that he's appealing.

With all this talk of how great he is, it's easy to overlook his actual position on... well, anything, really.

Again, let me say that I am a huge fan. I agree almost 100% with Dr. Paul's political positions.

But that doesn't change the fact that...
...He is running as a Republican who:
- Has voted AGAINST a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage and does not support legislation to counteract the "homosexual agenda."
- Is AGAINST the death penalty.
- Is seen as "weak on terror" because he voted AGAINST the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act, voted AGAINST making the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act permanent, voted AGAINST allowing electronic surveillance without a warrant, and let's not forget...
- ...is the ONLY candidate who would withdraw our troops from Iraq, beginning immediately.

Now, one would think that with the current Republican President's approval rating sinking to roughly one quarter of the population, and support for the war dwindling down to nearly the same, the one candidate running on a platform of withdrawal would be faring better. However, with "tuffness on terror" remaining near (if not at) the top of the Republican voting points, it really isn't any surprise that Dr. Paul is gaining support from former/current Democrats. Especially with each of the Democratic candidates slowly loosening his/her stance on the war to the point where if it continues, I'd be more worried about a Democrat invading Iran, just to "prove how tough" they are on terror.

But even with the "liberal" support, registered democrats seem more than happy to vote for Hillary R-C as she continues to dominate the polls, garnering near 50% support even with 7 (?) candidates still in the running.

And eventually, the liberals supporting Dr. Paul will realize that he:
- voted AGAINST allowing human embryonic stem cell research.
- is AGAINST affirmative action.
- voted FOR banning gay adoptions in D.C., and of course...
- ...would seek to return the U.S. Federal Government to performing ONLY the tasks for which the U.S. Constitution explicitly gives it power.

Again, I am for nearly everything that Dr. Paul stands for. Even so, I fully understand that were he elected President he would merely be the head of one branch of government and would still, barring any drastic shift that I don't think anyone is predicting, have a Democratic-controlled congress at his side. Therefore, these "extreme" ideas of a Government reduced to post-roads and national defense (exaggeration) would not be something he could pull off with the snap of his fingers. Although, given how much W has been able to expand the reach of Executive Power, I can't say I'd blame people for being cautious.

So, that's my spiel on Paul. Thanks to Bethany for provoking it. And, as a result, I have changed my mind.

If you're a registered Republican, vote Paul. Or, if you don't, don't vote Rudy (or, if you do, don't tell me).

If you're a registered Democrat, vote Colbert (write-in outside SC).

Glad to see you back in the saddle for the blogging. Here's my own political take on the '08 elections. I have three canidates that I pretty much can follow along except on a few terms. Now you know me to be a Republican, but I do believe in some certain Civil liberties. The Canidates I'm looking at are Paul, Thompson, and Duncan (if he really is running). My catch 22 is concerning the War and the Patriot Act. I do believe that there was an incitation of War made against the U.S. & I stand behind our troops 100%. Now here's where I differ on some things. We need to finish this war and allow the Iraqi people to setup their "Own" Democratic Repulic. And guess what once the war is finished, get out. Simple as that. Finish the the fight, stamp out Terrorismm, and get out. Now concerning The horrible Patriot Act. I believe it is the right concept to not play up to the civil liberites of Terrorists, but not at the extent of your citizens. I believe we need something far stronger against Terrorists without sacrificing Rights of Privacies. There has got to be a smarter desicion concernign terrorism and our given right to privacy. And as far as border control I definatly agree with Paul on tighter border controls, enforcing the current rulings, and creating a safer atmosphere for the American People. We need a better balance for quality and quanity concerning our Military. What I'd adovocate to a strong degree is a statment made by TDR "Speak Softly and carry a big stick". We can't allow our Military to go the way of mothballs, but we need not to let them Police the world either. There has to be a safer smarter stratagem concerning our current situation. I can agree with Ron Paul on a few things but I don't think we need rid of the Patriot Act but a smarter Revision. One that guarantees the rights of it's people and one that enable us to root out the evil these men do. I hope this make sense. And I hope you can understand a little more about my approach to Politics and the state of affairs concerning the challenges that America is currently facing.

Well Anyway I do hope things are going well for you.

    Great post Rockel.

I think you hit the nail on the head with Paul in outlining his various positions as to why, although extremely intelligent and usually also very articulate, he has alot of past votes that will piss off both parties. You've heard the statement that people make that they are fiscally conservative, socially liberal, well I think Paul is (and I am too) fiscally conservative and socially libertarian. Big difference, IMO. Socially liberal is basically being Socialist and not just allowing people to live their lives, but enabling them as well. It is hard to be both fiscally conservative and also socially liberal, as the social liberal mentality generally includes subsidizing various behaviors, like poverty. On the other hand, socially libertarian means people can do what they want, but that the government is not going to subsidize any of it.

I am in line with the previous comment that where I differ with Paul is the War and the Patriot Act. For one, I am sick to death of people all over saying it's an illegal war, we shouldn't have gone in etc. I am not going to argue whether we should have or shouldn't have, but the point now is that we are in there. All discussions should flow from that point: we are there, how do we best resolve this. Never mind how or why we went there. An analogy would be stabbing someone in a major artery. Once the knife is there, it doesn't matter how it got there. If you pull it out just because it was put there wrongfully (i.e., attempted murder) the shit is going to hit the fan instantaneously. The person will bleed out in seconds and be dead. You have to plan how to strategically take it out and do as little damage as possible. I have no beef with non-intervention, but once you have intervened, you gotta do what you gotta do. My second statement is that if you are going to go to war, go to freaking war. Carpet bomb them into the Stone Age. I mean that figuratively. For example, the surge is working because we have finally sent enough people to make some headway. Had we sent double our original force, we would likely be long gone by now with minimal forces left behind. But we try to be too cute. War is war for a reason, it ain't pretty. In short, I say no to Team America: World Police and yes to the most powerful military on the face of the planet.

Patriot Act wise, I completely agree with the above. There needs to be something that gets terrorists but leaves citizens alone. Perhaps just applying the Constitutional rights to people who are actual citizens would solve that problem.

A link to a NC site about Ron Paul and pushing him at the State Fair. I think they make some good points. With all the support that he has gotten, at the very least it shows just how hungry people in this country are for someone to return us to the basics of federalism.

Lyrics of the Week

ON THE NICKEL
by Tom Waits

("I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby.")

sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.

so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.

and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.

so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.

so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.

so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.
