The WORD of the Week |
Matthew 3:7-10
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.
And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Well, now that I got a good review, I have only to point to Joy of Cooking (where it was from)...but it was super tasty. I've been working on the batch I made for quite a while. And now for something else. Also a Joy of Cooking Entry.
Southeast Asian Curried Vegetable Stew
1 T Veggie Oil 1 ½ cumin seeds1 ½ medium onion, coarsely chopped 1-1” piece fresh ginger, peeled and quartered 4 cloves garlic, peeled 1-2 fresh jalapeno peppers, seeded 1 t ground turmeric 2 T water 1-14 oz can unsweetened coconut milk ½ c stock (chicken or veggie, depending on preference) 1 lb sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into ¾ “ cubes 3 c broccoli stems and florets 1-10 ½ oz package firm tofu, or 8 oz tempeh, cut into ¾ “ cubes 1 tomato 3 T lime juice 2 T water 2 T all purpose flour 1/2 -1 t chili paste 2 salt and ground black pepper lots of hot rice/cous-cous/quinoa/grain of choice fresh cilantro and chopped cashews3
Heat the oil and add the cumin seeds. Cook, stirring, for about 1-2 minutes. Process in a food processor/blender: onion, ginger, garlic, jalapenos, turmeric, and water. Add this to the cumin seeds and cook over med-low heat for 3-5 minutes. Stir in: coconut milk, stock, and sweet potatoes. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for about 8 minutes. Stir in broccoli and tofu/tempeh. Simmer about 10 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender. Add and bring to a boil: the tomato. Combine and stir in: lime juice, water, and flour. Boil, stirring, until thickened, about 1 minute. Stir in chili paste, and salt and pepper to taste. Hot grain of choice on a serving platter/indiv plates, stew stuff over that, and then top with cilantro and cashews, or not, depending on preference.
1: I used ground cumin cause I didn’t have the seeds. It worked. 2: I don’t know what chili paste is…I don’t think I actually added this… 3: I didn’t use either of these, and it worked out
I'm sure this could be meat-ified if desired...I bet you could add shredded cooked chicken (salt-pepper 2 skinless boneless breasts, fry in some oil about 5ish minutes a side before starting anything else) at the end. In fact, I think I did that...it was tasty.

I'm definitely going to have to pick up a copy of Joy of Cooking. The folks had a copy when I was growing up and we used to cook from it all the time. Lots of good stuff in there.
Thanks for another delicous-looking/sounding recipe.

Lyrics of the Week |
ON THE NICKEL
by Tom Waits
("I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby.")
sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.
so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.
and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.
so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.
so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.
so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.
