The WORD of the Week

Matthew 3:7-10

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Awards, Awards, Awards
So... last night the critics spoke; tonight the people speak.

Last night's results:

Best Picture
No Country for Old Men

No big surprise here. Congrats to the Coens.

Best Comedy
Juno

This reassures me that Juno will land a Best Pic nomination from the Academy; no win, though.

Best Actor
Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood

They got the category wrong here. It should be "Best Actor Alive." Oh, well. He better win the Oscar.

Best Actress
Julie Christie, Away from Her

Yeah. She's still my Oscar pick (at the moment). If I can find the cajones I may change that to Cotillard for "La Vie en Rose."

Best Supporting Actor
Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men

No surprise. He's still the frontrunner for the Oscar, but don't be surprised if a veteran takes it from him (Holbrook, Wilkinson) like last year's Arkin/Murphey showdown.

Best Supporting Actress
Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone

Big upset. As I've noted, this category should belong to Cate Blanchett for "I'm Not There." This may change a few minds. I'm still sticking with Cate for the Oscar.

Best Acting Ensemble
Hairspray

Thankfully there is no Acting Ensemble award at the Oscars. The less awards this film gets the better.

Best Young Actor
Ahma Khan Mahmidzada

No effect on the Oscars.

Best Young Actress
Nikki Blonsky, Hairspray

No effect on the Oscars.

Best Director
Ethan and Joel Coen, No Country for Old Men

Hoo-ah. Congrats to the Coens. Well deserved. I don't know if this solidifies an Oscar, but most certainly a nomination.

Best Writer
Diablo Cody, Juno

This is pretty big. The first time screenwriter, ex-stripper beat out the Coens, Aaron Sorkin, and Tony Gilroy ("Michael Clayton" - great script). I'm not sure she'll be able to hold up against the heavyweights at the Oscars, but I'm certainly rethinking things.

Best Composer
Jonny Greenwood, There Will Be Blood

This is awesome. Well deserved. Get that oscar.

Best Song
"Falling Slowly," Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova, Once

This has been, and will continue to be, my pick for the Oscar. The song category is always pretty obscure and rarely has a clear frontrunner. I gave it to "Falling Slowly" because "Once" is an incredibly beautiful, simple film that, while very engaging and enjoyable, will not (and rightfully should not) be considered for any other categories. I think the Academy voters will feel the same.

Best Foreign Language Film
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

No effect on the Oscars as "Diving Bell" is not in contention for the Foreign Language category. "Persepolis" is still a solid favorite. I'm still not ruling out "The Counterfeiters."

Best Animated Feature
Ratatouille

No surprise. It's only competition, if any, will come from "Persepolis." And the Academy voters aren't opposed to knocking out a clear favorite (Cars) for a more politically motivated piece (Happy Feet).

Best Family Film
Enchanted

No effect on the Oscars.

Best Documentary
Sicko

As I've noted before, I like what Michael Moore does (ie - stir shit up). I don't know that he deserves (another) Oscar. In fact, while putting together my list of nominees for the roomie's contest, Sicko barely made it in as a nominee. There are so many great, hard-hitting documentaries out there this year that don't come packaged in Moore's rough, dividing antics that I think the Academy voters will pass on this one.

Lyrics of the Week

ON THE NICKEL
by Tom Waits

("I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby.")

sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.

so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.

and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.

so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.

so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.

so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.
