The WORD of the Week

Matthew 3:7-10

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

"Connect the Dots"
Somebody explain to me:

a) How the USPATRIOT Act would have stopped the attacks of September 11th, had it been in place at the time...

b) What the USPATRIOT Act has done since its enactment to prevent another such attack...

c) Why the USPATRIOT Act should be renewed...

d) Why politicians feel they must speak to the American people as though they were preschoolers.

    A) The USPATRIOT Act would not have stopped 9/11.. 9/11 occured not due to the fact our intelligence institutions needed more power but due to the lack of action of said institutions.. who, as everyone knows by now, knew most of the hijackers were in the US and were not supposed to be here.

B)There is no conclusive evidence I've seen to show that the USPATRIOT Act has done anything to stop a repeat attack. Sure it gave Congress to spy on more people such as myself who is not apart of any terrorist organization. Some would argue that many sleeper cells have been discovered such as the one in Buffalo NY bout 2 years ago. Im not sure how much Patriot Act action was used there...

    C) I think that maybe some PARTS of the USPATRIOT Act should be rewritten and then renewed but then entire Act itself should not be renewed.

D)This is an easy one. If they talk down to us Its harder for us to talk down to them or up for that matter. If they belittled us they feel we wont speak out and say Your an Idiot. Unfortunately I still speak out and I do think that many Congressman are Idiots, its amazing to belive that some of these people have families.

    peace love and jersey

This post epitomizes the problem. People want to debate whether the US PATRIOT ACT is a good thing, or its potential to create good things, or its potential to prevent bad things when none of these are the issue. The issue at hand is the mere CONSTITUTIONALITY of the USPATRIOTACT, or its lack thereof.

When the states ratified the CONSTITUTION they did so with the condition that the federal body being created would recognize a list of basic rights outside of the CONSTITUTION. These rights became known as the BILL OF RIGHTS and make up the first ten amendments to our CONSTITUTION.

The USPATRIOTACT stands in direct opposition to several of these with the most egregious being against the FIRST AMENDMENT, the RIGHT TO FREEDOME OF SPEECH AND ASSEMBLY.

So, don't miss the real issue and be fooled like many others into believing that this is a good thing. Instead, if you actually are retarded enough to side with the proponents of the USPATRIOTACT, make the legislature follow the proper procedure for such an act -- amend the CONSTITUTION.

And politicians talk down to citizens so that citizens think that the issue is a simple one and that only a fool would fail to see it the same way a particular politician sees it. It makes them seem more intelligent, learned, and wise thus more qualified for the position of "politician."

But also, most people are stupid and would genuinely not understand anything in its truest most complex light. So either politicians treat us with the same level of intelligence we possess (as a whole), or else they sincerely enjoy patronizing the citizens they represent...

    Cobra,
"The USPATRIOTACT stands in direct opposition to (the Bill of Rights)."
Could you please cite the sections of the Act that best illustrate this, to strengthen your position?
Just a reference to the section of the act should be fine, although you are more than welcome to get into sub-sections and paragraphs if it pleases.

Lyrics of the Week

ON THE NICKEL
by Tom Waits

("I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby.")

sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.

so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.

and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.

so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.

so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.

so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.
