The WORD of the Week

Matthew 3:7-10

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

It Is Finished*
*phrase on loan from God.

the first draft of MY SCRIPT IS COMPLETE!!!

That's right, the first draft is finished. Well, actually, it's more of a 1.5 draft since most of the time that I spent not writing the ending was spent editing the first half. Now comes the fun part: Spending some time not writing. This is also known as letting the writing digest... stepping back from a project... and all sorts of other nonsense.

Meanwhile... the machine won again. It's getting close. 5-6-0. Everyone must pull out voodoo dolls with silver hair and goatee... and get to voodooing!

Also, while I'm asking for your help... it's time for you all to earn your place on the "peeps" list. I'm sorry, but that's just the way it is. I don't make the rules, I just play by 'em...

I need some input...

Firstly... My script has an ending. Now what it lacks is a title. Any thoughts? Again... as I am not a stickler for topicality or relevance, it bothers me not that none of you have even read the thing (well... the vast majority of you)... so... have away.

Secondly... As I have now managed to figure out the ultimate time-saving route for my morning commute, I have managed to shave a 1.5 hour drive down to a little over an hour. New dilemma... this amount of time is ideal for the playing of one entire mix CD. I seek help assembling the greatest "Wake Me Up and Prepare Me for a Day of Monotony and Repetition (and Redundancy)" Music Mix. Give it your best shot, and when I complete the playlist I shall share it with you all. (As a disclaimer... though don't let this effect your input too much... at the moment I'm listening to a lot of Tenacious D, Robbie Williams, Beck, Eels [obviously], and obscure European techno/trance)

Thirdly... ummm... come up with your own dilemma and give me your input on that.

That is all, peeps.

In other news:
The Cathey will be venturing to Cha-town to spend some quality time with the Rockel, et al. Plans are few and involve relaxing, eating, and seeing Jarhead.

Finally:
Let's hear it for Veterans.

I second the hurrah for the Veterans. I shall ponder your musical problem and get back to you. I have a lot of music to go through. Of course, I would vote for something like "Rusty Cage" covered by Johnny Cash for your morning wake-up, but more thoughts on that later.

Well, seems as though my comment was an inspiration to myself...I mad that CD (sans Huey Lewis, however) with some minor changes, "Rollover D.J" by JET made it instead of the former. "Night Moves" beat out "Hollywood Nights." And "Tomorrow comes Today" edged ahead of "Ghost Train" (Though I still rec. this one if you're unfamiliar).

If I were a modest person, which I am not, I would say something like: I'll let you know how it is. But instead, I will say: You and I both know this CD is gonna rock cuz I said so...duh...

Title your script "Cuz I said So."

where do i find the script? (im slow).

    Shaun... most excellent suggestions...
    Doyle... I await with anticipation...
Ryan... mmmm... yummy... and I like the title...
Charlie... don't worry... slow people are more than welcome here at Rockel's place... especially people who are so slow they're seeking a masters degree in nuclear physics... the script can be found in my head... and no where else... too bad you're not a neurosurgeon, just a stupid nuclear scientist, psh... but as soon as I get some selections up to a near-final-draft state I may post some snipits for you all to enjoy...

    Rockel. Out.

well in that case, Here are some names for the script:
    1)Project: PROJECT ;
    2)Operation: Operation
(incidentally, i originally intended these for a ficticious band's name and their album name, but thats not gonna happen).
3)Red What and Blue (i think i stole that from somewhere)
    4)A Stones Throw
    5)A Strict Determinism
... you know, Using half of a well known saying is kinda popular these days...
    6) The Bathwater
    7) Seven Pins
    8) Why does color matter?
    9) Dark Matter
    10) Recee's Pieces Feces Thesis*
    11) Dirty Water
    12) Dying in North Carolina

Ok. A dozen titles is plenty to chew on for now. Not having any Idea what your script is about, I tried to cover many bases.

*i really hope you incorperate this one somehow.

    The superman song
    some oldies
Rockin' the Suburbs, by Ben Folds

Thirdly: As for July...To go or to stay?

In Other news: have fun with that!

Finally: Where would we be without them?

  • At 11/11/05 10:30 PM, Blogger Rockel said…

Charlie... thanks a dozen times over...
Andie... it is catchy... and I thank you for your input...
Jaime... you're not helpin' out so much... "some oldies"?... you just narrowed my search from "any song," to "any song not released in the last twenty years."... Go... it's possible to look back and say "I should have gone," but it is not possible to look back and say "I should have stayed," because you did stay... right up to the point when you left... and where would we be?... under the cruel rule of a tyranous dictator, probably... but Bush wouldn't be President...

  • At 12/11/05 5:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

ok, fine, strike 'some oldies' and insert Concerto in G minor For Two Cellow, Strings, and Basso Continuo, RV 531. Vivaldi, performed by Yo Yo Ma, it's good.

  • At 12/11/05 5:57 AM, Blogger Rockel said…

    Specificity, Jaime. Specificity.

“Concerto in G minor For Two Cello, Strings, and Basso Continuo, RV 531. Vivaldi, performed by Yo Yo Ma.”

The studio recording or the Carnegie Hall concert recording? I mean, come on… is it that difficult? Nobody else seems to be having a problem with this assignment…

  • At 12/11/05 3:22 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Studio recording...I think....can you fit a whole orchestra in a studo? 2003, with the Amserdam Baroque Orchestra

    -Holes in the ocean
    -Falling Pictures
-Acid Rain (hmm...actually that sounds like it should be the name of a heavy metal band or something...)
    -Grapejuice stains
    -The yellow post-it note
    -Learning to scream
    -Statues of Salt
    -Refusing Angels
    -Rose-colored contacts
    and finally,
-The life and times of a Homemade slingshot

    There you have it.

OK... I'm not very good at titles, especially when it comes to plays, but I thought maybe I'd give it a try:

    Hollow Me
    Death Eaten
    Indecent Soul
    Fatal Breath
    Licentious Perfection
    Divine Deaf
    Mind Fog
    Black Heart
    Reticent Prayer

All right, its been a long time coming, but I've had to do some thinking for you. Here it is, my list, even if it does tend to lean a little on the rock-a-billy. I'll do another one with a different theme later.

    1. For Those About to Rock, ACDC
    2. Kiss My Irish Ass, Flogging
    Molly
    3. Drink and Fight, The Pogues
    4. Dick in Dixie, Hank Williams III
    5. Hot Rod Lincoln, Commander Cody
    6. One Piece At A Time, Johnny Cash
    7. Rusty Cage, Johnny Cash version
    8. City of New Orleans, Arlo
    Guthrie
    9. I Got A Name, Jim Croce
    10. Fever Dog, Stillwater
    Soundtrack
    11. The Rainbow Connection,
    MFATGG
    12. Fire and Rain, MFATGG
    13. The Rocker, Thin Lizzy (live
    version)
    14. The Fire Down Below, Bob Seger
    15. Life In the Fast Lane, Eagles
    16. Rockin' Down The Highway,
    Doobie Brothers
    17. Baby You Can Drive My Car,
    The Beatles
    18. I Guess The Lord Must Be In
    New York City, Harry
    Nilsson

There is a second option. Toss the whole list and just play Alice's Restaurant and see how far that gets you.

Aaron... I think you have an unfair advantage of knowing the kind of music I grew up listening to, and having basically the same taste that I have... I love the suggestions... (haha... "Say 'Metallica,' Aaron")
Doyle... dangit... a moment too late... I may have to compile another now... btw, Alice's Restaurant Massacre is just over 18.5 minutes... so it wouldn't get me too far...

  • At 15/11/05 1:41 PM, Blogger Doyle said…

Yeah, I know how long it is, I just thought it'd be an interesting beginning. You could do a long-song compilation for your morning commute. You know, toss on November Rain by GNR, a little American Pie by Don McLean, John Henry's Hammer by Johnny Cash, etc.

Lyrics of the Week

ON THE NICKEL
by Tom Waits

("I'd like to do a new song here. This is eh, it's about downtown Los Angeles on 5th Street. And eh all the winos affectionately refer to it as The Nickel. So this is kind of a hobo's lullaby.")

sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.

so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.

and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.

so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.

so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.

so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.
